It’s the New Year, and a fresh start.  For many their resolution includes becoming more fit, and burning off those Christmas cookie calories. The Loring-Restoule Region has endless opportunities for Winter Fitness and Enjoyment.

When visiting Loring-Restoule, one cannot help but be in awe of the rugged unspoiled wilderness that surrounds you. What better way to experience the joys of the outdoors, than spending a few hours or a day exploring via snowshoe or cross-country ski.  There are many benefits to exploring the outdoors in winter, especially via snowshoe.  Did you know that you can actually burn more calories snowshoeing than by hiking, running, or cross-country skiing at the same pace?  All this among breathtaking wilderness…sign me up!

Snowshoeing provides a cardio workout and helps to build your strength, agility, balance and endurance.  According to many in the healthcare field, snowshoeing is the best bang for your buck in terms of fitness.  It is relatively low cost for equipment and often free to hit the trails.  It is an effective, low impact, and safe form of exercise that will help to change your body shape…and it burns twice the amount of calories than hiking or running, yeah!

Taking part in outdoor fitness of any kind, has proven to create happy and healthier individuals, especially if these sports take place in nature.  Once you try it, snowshoeing will change your entire philosophy of winter. A great sport either alone, to reflect on yourself, and revel in natures beauty or with a group of friends enjoying the day…this activity is sure to put a smile on your face.

Trekking through wilderness areas offers an exceptional opportunity for the nature photographer.  Wildlife images are often stunning on a backdrop of white snow…Don’t forget your camera!

The Argyle & Restoule Area Paramedicine Program is here to assist in your healthy New Year endeavors.  They are starting a snowshoe/cross-country group that will meet weekly at the Arnstein Arena. (Where the Argyle Farmers Market is held in the summer).  Fridays, starting January 15, 2016 at 1:00pm they will meet as a group and walk/snowshoe. Please come out and join us. All ages welcome.

Skating is another fun winter activity. The Arnstein Arena has open ice and a family skate Wednesday’s from 6pm-9pm. For more information, visit the Loring Local Services Board Website.

After a day of delightful physical exertion, enjoy some downhome cooking at local diners such as Jakes Place Restaurant or Roxies Diner…or head back to your rental accommodation and enjoy a cup of hot cocoa in front of a roaring fire.
